It is 3:00 am, my eyes pop open, my body tenses and thoughts begin frantically racing in my mind. “What if this happens?” “What if that happens?’ As my mind plays out each scenario, there are no happy endings and my fear only intensifies. My muscles tense and I begin to breathe very shallow or even hold my breath.
I have found that slow intentional breathing can interrupt and counteract stress. It’s not always easy to do but with practice, it has been one of the most effective ways to calm my mind, body and spirit. It can be done anywhere, it doesn’t cost anything or require any equipment, and no one knows your doing it. There are many apps that teach breath work. Take time to try them and find what works best for you.
I have several ones I love:
- Breathe in to the count of 4, hold to the count of 4 and exhale to the count of 6
- Breathe in what I want more of: peace, calm or confidence and exhale what I want to release: fear, worry or tension.
Slow intentional breathing can calm your mind, body and spirit and help you THRIVE!
